13th Med Film Festival
Rome, November 8th to 18th
This year marks the 13th edition of the "Med Film Festival". The Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities considers this event, first held in 1995, to be of "National interest". The idea behind the festival, held in Rome from November 8th to 18th, is that of providing a wide selection of films from countries situated on the southern shores of the Mediterranean, as far as the Middle East. Over 40 countries participated out of a total number of one thousand films inscribed for selection. Sections in the official competition include the "Love and Psyche Award", reserved exclusively for works from Mediterranean countries, the "Italy in the cinema Award", dedicated to first or second works by new rising film directors from the Italian cinema, and "Short films from the goals" that presents a series of short films carried out in the prisons. Lastly a special focus is dedicated to Greek and Tunisian film-making.

27th edition of the International Festival of Mediterranean Films
Montpellier from October 26th to November 4th
For a week Montpellier becomes the capital of Mediterranean films: this small French town will in fact host the 27th edition of the International Festival of Mediterranean Films from October 26th to November 4th, with 251 films from 21 countries in the Mediterranean, from Portugal to the Black Sea. 125 of the films competing in the official selection have never been shown before. One of the highpoints in this edition is the concert by the Spanish actress Victoria Abril who, to the notes of the Bossa Nova, will conclude her French tournee on October 23rd. The rich programme includes some outstanding free events: a look at Spain with "Women behind the camera", a panorama of Spanish cinema seen through the eyes of women; while "Cinecittà-Hollywood", covering the reciprocal influences between Italian and American cinema, and tributes to Vittorio De Seta and Lucio Fulcimentre, are dedicated to Italian film-making.
Communication and development among Mediterranean countries
Erice October 26th/27th 2007
"Communication and development among Mediterranean countries" is the title of a convention that will be held in Erice next Friday and Saturday. The convention is divided into a two-day event. The first day is dedicated to communication subjects. The second day concentrates on the Mediterranean as an area of free trade in 2010. The convention has been organised by the Italian TP Association of Professional Commercial Artists and by the Trapani Confindustria. Internationally famous experts have been invited to take part. First of all the convention will analyse the geopolitical and economic backgrounds of the countries in the Mediterranean basin, in order to stimulate the presentation of ideas and proposals that can improve and encourage communications between the operators in these countries.
The problems of communication, the importance of an exchange of views, the management of the flow of immigrants and the prospects that can open up for local economies will therefore be discussed.
There is a community at the heart of all this, the community of the people of the Mediterranean, the oldest in the world, which is balanced today between conflict and hope, stalemate and opportunity.
If we encourage dialogue, understanding and respect for those who are different from us then we can open up new scenarios for a peaceful and profitable society.
It is therefore hardly surprising that many interesting and importante events have been held in the last few years on the "European-Mediterranean dialogue", on joint projects, on the problems related to information in Arab-speaking countries.
International Convention on «Equal opportunities and human rights»
Rome, October 26th/27th 2007
The International Convention on «Equal opportunities and human rights. Knowledge about equal opportunities and the policies of social inclusion is essential for the processes determining the construction of Europe» is being held to mark the Year of Equal Opportunities. The convention will be held in the Aula Magna of the University of the Sapienza Rectorship in Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, Rome on Thursday October 25th and Friday October 26th, at 9am. The International Convention on equal opportunities and human rights aims to offer an important chance for moment for scholars from the member countries of the European Union to meet and discuss, as well as allow them to compare studies, research and procedures for the construction, within the European perspective, of ‘knowledge about equal opportunities for everyone’. This meeting between different cultures and professions can lead to the multiplication of various points of view, approaches, knowledge and experiences and thus elaborate ‘inclusion policies’, as well as contribute towards a regular enhancement of the value of these differences - starting out from racial differences - that depend on the subjectivity value of the person at the centre of the process of European construction.
The Mediterranean Pole for art, music and theatre
Genoa October 22nd 2007
"The Mediterranean Pole for art, music and theatre" was presented this morning at the Conservatory of Genoa before a large number of the city's political representatives. It is the first of the poles for Higher Artistic and Musical Training planned by the Ministry of Universities and Research.
The project - forcefully encouraged by the Undersecretary of Universities and Research Nando dalla Chiesa and fully supported and carried out by the City Council, the Province and Region of Liguria - involves the Niccolo' Paganini Conservatory, the Academy Ligustica of Fine Arts, the Theatre of Prose, the Teatro Carlo Felice Foundation and the University - The House of Paganini.
The mission of the newborn project will be that of promoting Italian culture and art in the Mediterranean area, in particular in the area towards the West; as well as to stimulate the integration and collaboration between the various institutions in Genoa and their level of internationalisation. This is the first move in the strategy of renewal and modernisation of our entire system of Higher Education, aimed to create various cultural and artistic as well as economic subsystems, all possessing their own specific characteristics and vocations, that are capable of increasing the possibilities of employment for young people from the academies and conservatories once they have finished their studies. The second move will take place in Milan next Friday with the formalisation of the foundation of the "Milan Academies" pole.
